Fleetwood Mac were formed in July 1967 in London by guitarist Peter Green, following his departure from John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. Green had replaced Eric Clapton in the Bluesbreakers and earned acclaim for his work on the album A Hard Road. He soon reunited with drummer Mick Fleetwood, and together they began building a new band. Inspired by bassist John McVie, Green named the group Fleetwood Mac in hopes McVie would join. Although McVie initially stayed with Mayall, slide guitarist Jeremy Spencer and bassist Bob Brunning were recruited, and the band made their live debut on August 13, 1967, at the National Jazz and Blues Festival. Brunning played only briefly before McVie agreed to come aboard permanently. In February 1968, Fleetwood Mac released their self-titled debut album Fleetwood Mac, also known as Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac. A raw, blues-driven record, it featured a mix of blues standards and original material, including “Shake Your Moneymaker” and Green’s haunting instrumental “The World Keep On Turning.” The album reached No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart and established the band as one of the leading forces of the British blues boom.
