Danny Kirwan, the guitarist who joined Fleetwood Mac at just 18 and played on five of the band’s albums, died in London in 2018 at the age of 68. The news was announced by Mick Fleetwood on the band’s official Facebook page, though no cause of death was given. “Danny was a huge force in our early years… His true legacy, in my mind, will forever live on in the music he wrote and played so beautifully as part of the foundation of Fleetwood Mac, a legacy that has endured for over fifty years,” Fleetwood wrote. Kirwan was fired from the band in 1972 after a backstage incident with Bob Welch over guitar tuning. He refused to go onstage, smashed his guitar, and then criticized the band’s performance. “It was the straw that broke the camel’s back,” Fleetwood later explained. After leaving Fleetwood Mac, Kirwan released several solo albums with DJM Records but struggled with mental illness, alcoholism, and poverty. In 1993, after Fleetwood inquired about his whereabouts, The Independent and the U.K.’s Missing Persons Bureau tracked him down living in a London homeless shelter, where he had stayed for four years. In that interview, Kirwan showed little bitterness toward his former bandmates and even downplayed his role in Fleetwood Mac’s sound. “I was lucky to have played for the band at all. I just started off following them around, but I could play a bit and Mick felt sorry for me and put me in. I did it for about four years, until 1972, but… I couldn’t handle the lifestyle and the women and the traveling,” he said. He admitted to being functionally homeless since leaving the band.
