Introduction to Handpan Tutorials with Handpan Dan 🛸 To celebrate seven years of playing handpan, I will be posting tutorials of how to play cover songs. For the first five years playing handpan I only improvised and composed my own songs. Eighteen months ago I had someone who I used to visit pass away. Her daughter asked me to play Amazing Grace at her funeral and it inspired me to look at the sheet music. I found out I could play familiar songs on my handpan so I tried to learn some Christmas songs. People were surprised to hear me play “real” songs on the handpan as they realized it was a legitimate instrument with tuned notes. I’ve learned over 80 cover songs since then and I’m excited to share how to play them with you! 🤯 While getting my degree, I read research articles on the impact familiar songs have in memory care. Listening to old songs reduces anxiety for people with dementia, helping them to feel calm. Familiar music can also improve daily tasks and memory recall. I decided to try to learn some songs for the residents I visit. This has brought some of the most fulfilling moments as residents spontaneously sing along or tap their feet. 🤩 The handpan has such a warm heart opening sound that touches the soul deeply. Pairing this rich resonance with familiar songs brings immense joy and peace to residents. I believe handpans belong in healthcare because they are the most peaceful instruments and can be easily transported from room to room or across facilities. I am sharing these tutorials to help others spread the handpan love in healthcare. 🙏 Please let me know how you use these songs!
